Our
Lord says that when we approach Him with trust He fills
us to overflowing with so many graces that we can’t
even contain them, and these graces flow from us to
others around us.
What is trust? Trust
is Childlike. Jesus teaches us in the Gospels, “Unless
you become humble like little children you will never
enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt.
18:3)
Just
think of an infant. If an infant is not cared for and
fed it will die. An infant is totally dependent on its
parents. Jesus tells us in the Gospels, “Apart
from Me you can do nothing.”
(Jn 15:5c) A child is simple; a child
is humble. Our Lord stresses the need for humility.
Jesus tells St. Faustina, “True
greatness is in loving God and in humility.”
(Diary, 424, 427) God wants us to have that
humble disposition of faith. A child believes everything
it’s taught, and a child is also sensitive to
when it does wrong. It knows when it does wrong. And
these are the dispositions of trust.
What do you
put your trust in? Think about it. Do you trust in your
ability to work because you’re healthy? Do you
put your trust in your pocketbook? In your insurance?
In your home? In your property? Jesus is reminding
us that He is in charge. He is in charge of everything
that happens to us. He says, “Know
that I am with you; I bring about the difficulties and
I overcome them.” (Diary,
788) He wants us to place our confidence
in him.
When you
stop and think about trust, it’s interesting because
Jesus complains, “Sins
of distrust wound me most painfully.”
(Diary, 1076) When we lack confidence
in God, it’s like saying to Him, “God, I
don’t think You’re quite big enough to handle
my problem.” It’s totally irrational. Trust
is placing our confidence in Him who can do all things.
"For nothing will be impossible for
God." (Lk 1:37) St. Faustina writes in
her diary, “I do
not understand how it is possible not to trust in Him
who can do all things?” (Diary,
358) Jesus tells us, “Mankind
will not have peace until it turns with trust to My
Mercy. Oh, how much I am hurt by a soul's distrust!
Such a soul professes that I am Holy and Just, but does
not believe that I am Mercy and does not trust in My
Goodness. Even the devils glorify My Justice but do
not believe in My Goodness." (Diary,
300)
Look at the
two apostles Judas and Peter: both were called by Christ,
both were given the same opportunity for holiness. Judas
betrayed Our Lord for power and money. But then he was
sorry. He went back to the Pharisees and returned all
the money. However, he lacked that humble faith to turn
to Christ with confidence asking for forgiveness. Judas
lost hope and finally took his life.
Peter denied
Our Lord three times, but when Jesus glanced at him,
he was moved to heartfelt contrition. He was humble
and sorry and repented. Jesus then put Peter in charge
of His Church! Look at what the power of trust
can do!
Our Lord
is showing us the power that we have with trust. This
is why He says, “When
a soul praises My goodness, Satan flees to the very
bottom of hell.” (Diary,
378) This is why in difficult situations we should
always praise God, open up Scripture, praise the glory
and mercy of God. For example, if you stub your toe?—“Thank
you, Jesus! Praise you, Jesus!” In this way we
thwart Satan who wants to make us impatient, lose our
temper, and use foul language. Jesus wants us
to teach others to trust in Him. "I
desire trust from My creatures. Encourage souls
to place great trust in My fathomless mercy. Let the
weak, sinful soul have no fear to approach Me, for even
if it had more sins than there are grains of sand in
the world, all would be drowned in the unmeasurable
depths of My mercy." (Diary,
1059)
God is all
good. He wants us to be like Him who is all good. Trust
is so essential. It is the key to the Heart of Christ.
